Ewan McGregor has a wishlist of actors he’d love to work with: Johnny Depp. Kate Winslet. Rebecca Hall. But there’s one actor he’s not sure about: Daniel Day-Lewis.

The actor told The L.A. Times that he’s so intimidated by Day-Lewis’ talent, he’s actually considered giving up acting.

“Whenever I watch him, I think, ‘What’s the point? There’s no point in carrying on. That’s it.’”

The star went so far as to burn his actor’s union card after watching In the Name of the Father, Day-Lewis’ Oscar-nominated film about a man falsely implicated in an IRA bombing.

“I remember watching In the Name of the Father and coming out of the cinema and burning my equity card and going, ‘I’m finished.’ There’s no way I can ever be that good, and it’s so depressing.”

Day-Lewis is known for his intense, dramatic performances, while McGregor’s career has spanned musicals, comedies and quirky indies. Ironically, Day-Lewis seems to be taking a page from the Moulin Rouge star’s career for his next project: he’s the lead in the the musical Nine, also starring Nicole Kidman.

“Federico Fellini’s “8½,” a 1963 Italian flick about a director struggling to complete his ninth movie, isn’t exactly populist entertainment, yet it continues to influence new generations. Woody Allen leveraged it for “Stardust Memories,” and Bob Fosse put a musical spin on a director’s creative block in “All That Jazz.”

In turn, Rob Marshall owes a debt to Fosse, whose stage play “Chicago” became an Oscar-winning film for Marshall in 2002. Marshall’s “Nine,” although based on a musical inspired by “8½,” is as much Fosse as Fellini. It’s a shadow of a shadow, refracted through a funhouse mirror. For all the noise and color, it feels like an exercise and not a natural expression.

The biggest problem is that the star in the center of this universe is a black hole. Daniel Day-Lewis is arguably the finest actor in the English-speaking world. He’s also the least Italian guy imaginable.

As Guido Contini, the “maestro” of Italian cinema circa 1963, Day-Lewis speaks in an accent, wears sunglasses in groovy locales and sort of sings about his conflicted nature.

The performance rings hollow, especially compared with Marcello Mastroianni in the original “8½.” Mastroianni was a well-known playboy; Day-Lewis seems like he would send his co-stars Christmas cards.

Those award-winning co-stars include Marion Cotillard, a standout as Guido’s long-suffering wife; Judi Dench as his loyal wardrobe supervisor; Penelope Cruz as his hot-blooded mistress; Nicole Kidman as a cold-blooded superstar; Kate Hudson as a flattering American reporter; pop star Fergie as a prostitute who teaches the ways of love and Sophia Loren as his mama.

Each of these women gets a show-stopping number to explain her place in Guido’s life. The set pieces are marvelously art-directed, and Marshall dials back the frenetic editing that made “Chicago” exhausting.

Yet none of it is enough to evoke a real emotion from either the viewer or Day-Lewis”

I think this is complete and utter BULLSHIT. Daniel Day Lewis is the greatest actor in the known Universe and to undermine anything he does is sacreligious to this God of men. Not only does he have the looks, the charm, and the voice perfect for Guido Contini, but the man can ACT. That’s alot more than most “actors” can say. They’re judging DDL for his acting and appearance when they praise Twilight? That movie is full of worthless scenes and ridiculous, stupid, and just plain terrible actors/characters and those movies top the list as best movies? You have got to be fucking kidding me. What has the world come to when retarded little fairies make it on the “sexy” lists and are credited as great actors, and DDL isn’t respected for what he is, THE best actor ever.
